ANALYSIS: 1st-ever 'Daylight Offside' goal scored in Canadian Premier League 🇨🇦

CanPL
For the first time this season, the Canadian Premier League saw a goal awarded as a result of its new daylight offside rule trial, in partnership with FIFA. Here's what happened, and what it means for the sport.

For the first time this season, the Canadian Premier League saw a goal awarded as a result of its new daylight offside rule trial, in partnership with FIFA.

In the 20th minute of Pacific FC's 2-2 draw with the Halifax Wanderers, Alejandro Díaz scored a goal that under the previous offside rule, would have been called off.

On the second phase of a corner kick, Matthew Baldisimo flicked a shot goalward that was parried away by Marco Carducci. At the time of his strike, Díaz moved forward so that there was no separation, or daylight, between himself and the second-last Halifax Wanderers' defender. His entire body was not beyond the defender.

So when the rebound landed at his foot, he was considered onside, and therefore the opening goal in the match stood.

Early in this CPL season, set-pieces have been one of the clear ways that this new rule has been  by clubs, both in how they attack and defend these situations.
