CanWNT Form Guide: Who might feature in friendlies against the United States & Costa Rica

For the fifth time this year, the Canadian women’s national team host a match on home soil as they take on Costa Rica on Friday at BMO Field (7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT).

They follow that up by travelling down to the United States for a significant test against the world’s top-ranked team, the United States, at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, July 2 (7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. ET). Both of those matches will be available live on OneSoccer.

Here is how Casey Stoney’s 23-player squad is performing heading into this pair of friendlies:

Goalkeepers

Sabrina D'Angelo, Aston Villa

D’Angelo is currently in her off-season in the WSL, but has seen solid game time so far under Stoney, largely splitting the net with Sheridan since the new manager took over. Her most recent start was in a 3-1 win over Haiti in Montréal on June 3.

Lysianne Proulx, Juventus FC

The 26-year-old did not appear in either of Canada’s matches against Haiti, and has played in just two matches between club and country in 2025, most recently against Chinese Taipei at the Pinatar Cup in February.

Kailen Sheridan, San Diego Wave

Sheridan is the one Canadian goalkeeper who comes into camp in-season right now, suggesting she will likely start, especially against the United States. She has played every minute of this campaign so far for the San Diego Wave, keeping clean sheets as they sit third in the NWSL table.

Defenders

Gabrielle Carle, Washington Spirit

This will be a bit of a special camp for Carle, as Canada take on the United States at the same Audi Field, on July 2, where she plays her club football for the Washington Spirit. Carle has been a mainstay at right-back for the Spirit this season, going the full 90 in their past three matches.

Zara Chavoshi, Orlando Pride

The 22-year-old has not played for the Orlando Pride since making her senior Canadian national team debut against Haiti on June 3. This camp represents another opportunity to potentially get minutes, including the possibility of facing her birth nation, the United States. A dual national, she attended a USWNT U-23 training camp in March.

Vanessa Gilles, FC Bayern Munich

Gilles hasn’t played a club match since a 3-0 win over PSG for Lyon in 2024-25 Première Ligue final. However, she has since departed the club, signed with German giants Bayern Munich which will be a big next step in her professional career.

Ashley Lawrence, Chelsea FC

After missing out on Canada’s most recent camp, Lawrence is back and available for Stoney this week. The timing couldn’t be better, as Canada will certainly lean on her experience and quality against the world number one United States.

Marie Levasseur, Montpellier HSC

After making her first CanWNT appearance in three years, starting and playing the full 90 in Montréal against Haiti, Levasseur has been called back for this camp. She will face more difficult competition for minutes, with Lawrence back in the squad, but could certainly get another look.

Jade Rose, Manchester City

Rose enters Canada’s camp fresh off signing her first professional contract, with Manchester City of the FA WSL no less. With her long-term club future sorted, Rose looks like she will continue to be a key member of this national team for many years to come.

Shelina Zadorsky, West Ham United

Zadorksy has been a pretty reliable partner for Vanessa Gilles with Canada as Kadeisha Buchanan continues to recover from injury. She recently scored her seventh goal for Canada in a 4-1 win over Haiti.

Midfielders

Marie-Yasmine Alidou, Portland Thorns

Alidou’s most recent start for Portland came on June 7, and she has come off the bench the past two matches. She has been limited to a goal and an assist in 10 appearances since joining the Thorns.

Jessie Fleming, Portland Thorns

Fleming has started two of Portland’s past three matches in midfield, including going 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory over the Washington Spirit on June 15, picking up a pair of assists in that match.

Simi Awujo, Manchester United

The 21-year-old was finally back from injury and available for CanWNT this past window, starting the second game of their window against Haiti. She will look to build on that this time out, and re-establish herself as a key midfield option on this team under Stoney.

Kayla Briggs, Michigan State University

Briggs’ NCAA season with her new school, Michigan State University, doesn’t start until August. But Briggs has shown well in two consecutive camps now under Stoney with the senior team, and will fight for more minutes to prove herself at this camp.

Julia Grosso, Chicago Red Stars

Grosso has started the past two matches for Chicago, including going the full 90 against the Portland Thorns this past weekend. Her club, however, has struggled this season with just one win through 13 matches in the NWSL.

Emma Regan, AFC Toronto

Regan continues to flourish in a starring role in her first season in Toronto in NSL, recently scoring another stunning goal against Vancouver Rise. She started Canada’s most recent match against Haiti, and has been a fairly regular starter under Stoney since her appointment.

Forwards

Annabelle Chukwu, University of Notre Dame

Perhaps the most exciting new inclusion in this squad, Chukwu, 18, is Canada’s all-time youth national team leading goalscorer. She recently led Canada to their first Concacaf U-20 title since 2008, scoring four goals, including the championship winner in the 122nd minute against Mexico in the final. She has yet to make her senior debut for Canada, but this camp could be a great moment to begin her much-deserved transition to the senior team.

Jordyn Huitema, Seattle Reign FC

The 24-year-old has come off the bench the past two weeks for the Seattle Reign, following a short and fully understandable hiatus from both club and country after being the victim of an armed robbery.

Adriana Leon, San Diego Wave

Following a brace against Haiti in May for Canada, Leon scored against the Houston Dash on June 13 in a 3-2 victory, before going the full 90 in a 0-0 draw with the Washington Spirit on Sunday.

Nichelle Prince, Kansas City Current

Prince missed out on Canada’s most recent camp through injury. She came off the bench this past weekend in the 67th minute for the league-leading Kansas City Current, and looks fit and ready to go for Stoney during this camp.

Janine Sonis, Racing Louisville

Sonis had a stunning four assists in Canada’s 4-1 win over Haiti on May 31, and has continued that strong play with Racing Louisville in the NWSL. Starting the club’s past three matches on the wing, she picked up an assist against Utah Royals on June 6, 3-2 win, a goal in a 4-2 loss to the KC Current on June 14, before going 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory over second-place Orlando Pride this past Friday.

Evelyne Viens, AS Roma

After recovering from an injury that kept her out of most of the second half of the season with AS Roma, Viens scored a brace against Haiti in a 3-1 win in her home province. Viens will be looking to build on that performance this camp and establish herself as a go-to option under Stoney.

Holly Ward, Vancouver Rise FC

Another standout performer from Canada’s past game was Ward, who had a goal and an assist in Montréal against Haiti. She has been kept off the scoresheet of late in NSL action, and is still looking for her first professional club goal, but will try to build momentum from her recent national team performances at this camp.
