RECAP+HIGHLIGHTS: Janine Sonis hat trick powers CanWNT to 6-0 win vs. Costa Rica
The CanWNT returned to winning ways on Tuesday, as they picked up a commanding 6-0 victory over fellow Concacaf opposition, Costa Rica.
Canada came flying out of the gates in this game, as Evelyne Viens pounced on a mistake and buried home to put her team up 1-0 after just seven minutes.
From there, Canada did well to double their lead just before half-time, as Janine Sonis made a great run into the box before slotting home a perfect cross from Jessie Fleming.
After that, Canada managed to find their rhythm in the second half, although they got some help from their opponents, as Maria Coto was sent off for a foul on Vanessa Gilles, one that earned Canada a penalty.
There, Sonis made no mistake with the finish, slotting home to put her side up 3-0.
Sonis, who started this game at left back, wouldn't be done there, either. After Canada won another penalty after a Costa Rican handball in the 78th minute, Sonis once again stepped up to take it, and she slotted home with ease to complete her hat trick.
With the result all but assured by that stage, Canada did well to add to their lead with a couple of late goals, as Jordyn Huitema bundled home a corner to make it 5-0, before Marie-Yasmine Alidou pounced on a mistake to put her team up 6-0 on the last kick of the game.
Now, Canada will be back in action in October, as they continue to prepare for the Concacaf W Championships in the fall.
