It was not easy, but Cavalry secured an important victory at home . This victory allows Tommy Wheeldon Jr’s men to move within 4 points of Forge FC, still at the top of the standings.

For FC Supra, this defeat keeps the Quebecers 6 points away from the playoffs, even though they still have one game in hand against Vancouver FC and two against the Halifax Wanderers, their main competitors. That said, despite the points dropped against Cavalry, the content of the match proved very encouraging.

“We played our best match of the season,” said Supra coach Nick Razzaghi. “I think we were excellent, even though the final result is disappointing. We defended very well and even when Cavalry had the ball, they were not that dangerous. It’s really unfortunate, but I’m proud of the guys.”

“Was it perfect? No. But was it full of character, a good mindset and a refusal to lose? Absolutely,” said Cavalry coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

Despite a heavily reshuffled team due to suspensions and unavailability, Cavalry quickly got into the match. It took them just 3 minutes to find a way through.

After a nice spell of possession, Nathaniel Edwards on the left side received the ball, took on Abou Sissoko, exceptionally playing at left-back, before sending a shot into the far corner of Milli’s goal from the angle of the box (1-0; 3rd).

Technically and collectively dominant in the first half, Cavalry took control of the ball. Supra, however, remained dangerous in spells. The Montrealers could also have equalized during one of their rare periods of dominance in the opening 45 minutes. Sean Rea, after a very good combination with Omar Elkalkouli, broke into the box but his shot hit the post, with Joseph Holliday frozen on his goal line.

Diyaeddine Abzi, on the left side, worked tirelessly and was the spark behind any of FC Supra’s attacking ambitions. In the wake of his good performance, he thought he had won a penalty shortly before halftime, but it was ultimately overturned following a video review. It also earned him a yellow card for simulation (39th).

The match, enjoyable to watch, retained all its interest thanks to a great save by Joakim Milli just before halftime. From a cross coming from Edwards on the left, Camargo took a first-time shot, but Milli, ideally positioned, intervened to keep his team in the match.

Two goals in the second half

With only a one-goal lead at halftime, Cavalry could not afford to let their guard down, while Supra’s few opportunities in the first 45 minutes showed that there was room to come back into the game.

The Montrealers, in fact, returned to the pitch with more intent than their opponents. More pressing and more determined, the Montrealers created the first opportunities of the second half through Biello and Rea.

The attacking midfielder ultimately played an important part in the conversion of this Quebec side’s strong spell, volleying a corner that had been cleared into the middle by the defense. His attempt, off target, found Keesan Ferdinand in its path, with his chest deflecting the ball into the net (1-1; 55th).

Sean Rea, with another long-range effort, forced Holliday into a spectacular save (81st), but, generally speaking, technical errors became more frequent and scoring chances became increasingly rare.

The coaching on both sides did not really change the course of the match, and it was ultimately from a set piece that Cavalry tipped the balance late in the game. From a corner perfectly delivered by Ali Musse, Amer Didic rose much higher than Chrétien to head the ball into the back of Milli’s net (90+3).

Without a miraculous save from Joseph Holliday on a header by Chrétien at the very last second, FC Supra would have taken a point that would not have been undeserved, but it was Cavalry who ultimately took the victory.

“We need to have a better first half,” lamented Sean Rea. “After the goal, I think we played a good match. In terms of performance, the team created a lot of chances, we played a good match and I’m just very disappointed with the result.”

Relatively little threat throughout the second half, Cavalry defeated a spirited Supra team through opportunism.
